The Batman and Joker movies are the first productions from DC Studio to be place in the Elseworlds timeline, according to James Gunn and Peter Saffron.

According to Screen Rant, Gunn and Safron introduced the retroactive Elseworlds moniker along with a lineup of TV shows and motion pictures for the new era of DC cinematic adaptations. Although 2019’s Joker stirred up some controversy, the movies were well-receive by critics when they first came out, but fans have questioned where they fit within the DC Universe. It had been unclear when a movie adaptation of the Elseworlds would begin, but DC and Warner Bros. had last expressed interest in doing so.

What is Elseworlds?

The Marvel What If…? stories and the DC’s Elseworlds series take place outside the established canon. In contrast to What If, the Elseworlds stories are entirely self-contain rather than beginning at a moment of deviation from the main plot. As a result, Batman and The Joker are now consider part of their own canon outside of the other DC Studios movies.

Although the DCU is a universe, Safron underlined that the main films would adhere to a single continuity. He said that anything that isn’t consider a part of the DC Universe would be made explicit, adding that The Batman and Joker flicks are examples of this. Anything that is not DCU will now be identify as such.

DC releases its film and TV schedule.

Gunn previously claimed that a secret DCU TV series was in the works, but he would not discuss the plot. Batman, Superman, Supergirl, and Swamp Thing were the leading actors in the initial wave of new movies that the duo unveiled.
