Winter storms cause holiday travel problems around Arizona
Some major storm fronts are presently coming in over the west coast. Winter weather is having an impact on highway travel in Arizona. Some people are going to have a white Christmas, but some will have no Christmas.
Three people have already died this morning in a major sand storm south of Phoenix with at least 20 collisions in that area. DPS and other officials are reporting at least four inches of snow building on northern Arizona highways. Currently in northern Arizona, DPS officers are investigating over 20 collisions and assisting with over 50 slide-offs where motorists have lost control if their vehicles due to traveling too fast on slippery road surfaces, officials say. The vehicles involved are a combination of commercial and passenger cars. It is unknown how many injured or the total number of vehicles involved in the various collisions, officials say. DPS says Interstate 40 near Williams is shut down in both directions after a semi-tractor trailer and two cars collided, causing a chain reaction. One car rolled over and landed on its top. DPS says there are problems due to weather and slippery surfaces on Interstate 17, milepost 310 to 325, 25 miles south of Flagstaff. Officials say severe snowfall has also hit north of Payson along State Route 87 and warn drivers to use caution. In western Arizona, the entire Colorado River Valley is under wind warnings thru Tuesday night and all day Wednesday. It has been raining off and on since Monday night from Bullhead City to Lake Havasu City. Drivers everywhere seem to be in a hurry to finish shopping and head for their Christmas destinations. The weather is expected to let up a bit on Christmas Eve. So to be sure you reach your Christmas destination --- GET WEATHER REPORTS, SLOW DOWN, DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE and BE CAREFUL!
