Needles CHP officer saves driver's life
A Needles resident and California Highway Patrol Officer Joseph Urrea is being credited with saving the life of a Texas driver.
On Monday at just before noon, Deandre Mclaine of Austin, Texas, was traveling westbound on Interstate 40, about 15 miles west of Needles. CHP reports that Mclaine was talking on his cell phone and changing the station on his radio when his 2008 Chrysler Aspen ran off the road and rolled over. Three of the car's passengers were ejected, but McLaine was trapped in the vehicle that started to ignite. Urrea, along with drivers who had stopped to help, attempted to put out the flames with fire extinguishers but were unsuccessful. Urrea reports that he tried to remove McLaine through the driver's side window, but the roof of the vehicle had collapsed, making an easy rescue very difficult. Seeing the flames becoming larger and more intense, Urrea says he moved around to the passenger side and attempted to free McLaine; however, the center console was blocking the way. The CHP officer then reached across McLaine, removed his seat belt and reclined the seat -- then ran back around to the driver's side. With the assistance of a passing driver and retired CHP Sergeant Rick Sigler, McLaine was pulled through the broken driver's side window. Reportedly, just after McLaine was rescued, the vehicle became fully engulfed in flames. No other injuries were reported from the scene of the crash.
