Injured hiker rescued from shelf on side of mountain
Mohave County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Units were deployed Monday afternoon at about 4:00 p.m., to rescue a male subject who had been injured after falling from a face of a cliff in the area of Boundary Cone Mountain, approximately 2 miles south of Oatman.
The victim identified as Timothy McClure, 21, of Tazewell Virginia, was hiking with friends when he fell. A hiking friend called 911 and spoke with dispatch. They thought he had a broken leg. Dispatch was able to determine their location. Search and Rescue members including the technical rope and ground members and deputies responded. SAR members along with personnel from Mohave Fire Department and Oatman Fire Department hiked into the base of the mountain and were unable to reach the victim. McClure landed on a sloping 5-foot ledge, approximately 400-feet from the top of the mountain and 600-feet below him. Arizona Department of Public Safety Air Rescue Ranger out of Phoenix responded and assisted. Rescue attempts were deferred until daylight due to darkness. That evening Phoenix Ranger flew 7 members of the rescue team to the top of the mountain. The technical rope rescue members setup a repel system and repelled a SAR paramedic to the victim. The SAR paramedic stabilized the victim and medically treated him while he stayed with the victim on the ledge throughout the night. Also, the technical rescue team stayed on the peak of the mountain and prepared for the early morning rescue. Tuesday morning at about 7:30 a.m., Kingman Ranger responded and relieved the Phoenix crew. Kingman Ranger short hauled the victim from the ledge of the mountain to a nearby command post where CareFlight airlifted him to Sunrise Medical Center in Las Vegas. McClure was treated and later released. Mohave County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the assisting agencies: Coconino County Search and Rescue with 3 rope technician members and 1,800 feet of rope, Mohave Valley Fire Department, Oatman Fire Department, Bullhead City Fire Department, Kingman Fire Department, River Medical ambulance and Arizona Department of Public Safety Air Rescue Ranger out of Phoenix and out of Kingman.
