Keep your pets safe during the holidays
The Bullhead City Animal Control Shelter would like to remind residents to pay close attention to pets this holiday season.
“A lot of us travel for the holidays, so make sure you organize someone to watch your animals or call a boarding facility well in advance because they can fill up quickly this time of year,” said Animal Control’s Bureau Manger Leah Rojas. “Pets need to be cared for every 24 hours with fresh food and water.” It is also important to use pet friendly decorations. “Avoid decorating your tree with tinsel or icicles or put them at the very top so cats won’t be tempted to play with it or eat it. They can be harmful to pets,” Rojas said. While it can be tempting to ‘treat’ your pet during Christmas, be careful during those holiday meals. “ Turkey bones are very brittle and can easily get caught in their throat,” Rojas added. “Chocolate is very toxic to pets as well.” Before wrapping gifts, wrap wires around the house. Extra lights and electrical decorations can lead household animals to mistake cords for a chew toy. Tape down electrical cords to prevent burns, shocks or other serious injuries. If you plan to surprise a loved one with a pet this holiday season, be sure they want an animal and have the lifestyle to take good care of it. “It’s important to know the breed they want,” Rojas said. “The Animal Shelter offers gift certificates so people can choose their own pet. That way, it’s more of a bond between the owner and the pet.” For more tips, call the Animal Shelter at (928) 763-6000.
