Law enforcement, paramedics, hospitals gear up for New Year's Eve
A survey taken earlier this week shows that 62% of the population has no intention of going anywhere on New Year's Eve. However, New Year's Eve is an evening when many people exercise their right to party. Millions across the country will celebrate New Year's Eve by drinking, using drugs, etc., counting down to 2012.
Spending the night in jail or in the hospital is not how anybody wants to end 2011 or to begin 2012. Hospital staff are bracing for an extremely busy holiday, planning for a high number of alcohol-related illnesses and injuries to ring in the new year. Hospitals have ordered extra medical supplies and are staffing more doctors and nurses, because New Year's Eve falls on a weekend. Paramedics will work with hospitals to handle the high volume of calls and patients. Paramedics are stocking ambulances, building up supplies in order to provide emergency transport to the closest hospital. Law enforcement, including police departments, sheriffs and DPS are doubling their force on the streets and highways this weekend. Jail staff is increasing on New Year's Eve for the increased intake that is expected. So if your intention is not to remain sober, then you'd better make sure you have a ride with someone who is sober, or you could very likely be joining the groups that spend at least a portion of the new year in a hospital or a jail, if you survive.
