LIVE WITH NASA
Topock students attended a live, online Webinar with NASA scientists in the Antarctica. Eight fifth graders and seven junior high students logged on Tuesday to interact with researchers as they demonstrated activities and experiments, involving retrieving thirty foot long tubes containing ice samples from over 30 to 55 million years ago. They contained plant and animal remains from microscopic to centimeters in size. However, these specimens have provided volumes of information about Earth’s past.
There were 28 students in attendance. Those with laptops were personally connected. Those without laptops were able to view the presentation as it was projected onto a screen.
Students were invited to ask questions during the presentation. Two students from Topock Elementary had their questions broadcasts. Alex, in 6th grade, asked, “Have you found these fossils anywhere else on Earth?” Ally, also a 6th grader, asked, “What kind of a degree do you need to have your job?”
This is the second electronic field trip students have participated in this year, and more are being planned.
