This month Medicare is beginning a new federal policy that covers HIV screening for seniors.
Seniors use to be able to go out and just do anything they wanted. But that’s not the case anymore. Sexually transmitted diseases are something people are talking about nowadays.

Studies show in the past decade that STDs have more than doubled in people age 65 and older. That’s just the reported cases.

Just because you're too old to get pregnant doesn't mean you no longer need condoms. Doctors are responsible. Medicare covers HIV screenings for seniors and doctors should see that seniors get tested. A lot of people have contracted a lot of those diseases. A result of hygiene negligence and other factors, seniors are more susceptible to disease. Doctors need to make this kind of discussion appropriate and acceptable.

Most seniors never had to think about testing for sexually transmitted diseases when they were younger. Many older Americans are carrying disease and may ignore the symptoms believing they are signs of aging or associating them with other ailments.

Doctors say that all sexually active people should be tested for STDs annually.
