1/28 Phoenix - City of Phoenix eliminating 1400 positions

Over 350 police and 150 fire positions are on the chopping block to help balance the city's budget. The Police Department will eliminate patrol officers up thru assistant chiefs. Fire will cut positions across the board.

The proposed reductions are among dozens of cuts the city unveiled Thursday as part of the plan to help solve the city's $242 million deficit for this year and fiscal 2011. Cuts across all city departments would total about $140 million.

The city is also proposing the closing of six library branches, five senior centers, parks, recreation, youth sports and museums. Other Phoenix points of pride also would be closed or face reduced funding.

Altogether, about 1400 positions are set for elimination. After a set of 15 public hearings, the city council is expected to vote on a revised budget on March 2nd. The cuts will take effect in April.
