Photo Radar likely to disappear in 2010
Rumors are... that Arizona legislators will abandon the statewide use of speed limit enforcement cameras, also known as photo radar. This action could happen as soon as Monday 1/11, which starts the first week of the 2010 session.
The action is a result of motorists deciding to ignore red light camera and speed camera tickets issued by private companies like Redflex Traffic Systems, the Austrailian company contracted by the Department of Public Safety in 2008. Ron Gould, District 3 State Senator of Lake Havasu City, has been a vocal opponent of photo radar from the outset. Gould says it is unconstitutional and too much power for the government to have. The cameras have the ability to track people from point A to point B. Governor Jan Brewer is also on record saying she does not like the cameras, and a ballot question regarding photo enforcement will likely go before the state's voters in November 2010. DPS is reporting more than 700,000 tickets were issued to drivers going 11 mph or more over the speed limit between September 2008 and September 2009. In fact, if the mandated $181.50 in fines and surcharges were collected on the outstanding tickets, the state would collect more than $127-million. However, due to the lack of collection and enforcement efforts, that amount is actually only $36.8-million through September 2009. Gould said that photo radar is looting money from the cities and the counties. The cities and the counties have to prosecute the drivers that are ticketed and they don't get any money back from the photo radar fine. Governor Napolitano and the legislators that voted it in, dumped it all on the cities and counties for enforcement. Call or email us today and let GSX help your business to grow.
