Man sentenced for shooting 3 people
A Lake Havasu City man was sentenced Thursday after he was convicted of shooting three local people in 2008.
Darren Lee Baltes, 47, got 21 years for two attempted second-degree murder charges. He shot Lake Havasu residents Laura Ellzey and Eric Brookshier. Baltes received nine more years for an aggravated assault charge linked to a third victim, Jacquelyn Good, according to Deputy County Attorney Jeremy Huss of the Mohave County Attorney’s Office. It was a five-minute nightmare that the victims had to live through … there is mental trauma to all three. The charges originated 2/20/2008, after Baltes unlawfully entered a residence in the 400 block of Bluegrass Way and fired a .22 caliber rifle numerous times. Two people stood to speak briefly on Baltes’ behalf before Baltes stood to address the court with a prepared, written statement. There was not much remorse shown from his statement. The 30 year sentence followed a jury trial that lasted just more than four days last month. A 12-person jury deliberated four hours on December 11 before convicting Baltes on two felony counts of attempted second-degree murder, three felony counts of aggravated assault and one felony count of first-degree burglary.
